Charting the development of a game-changing AI

Gran Turismo is one of the most popular racing video games ever made, and one of the most realistic. Sony AI set out to build an AI driver that could master its hyperrealistic physics with superhuman speed and control. The result, GT Sophy, was a reinforcement learning breakthrough that made the cover of the prestigious science journal Nature. Sony AI wanted to explain the steps leading to its innovation — and to document the moment when GT Sophy faced off against the best human players in the world.

We built a comprehensive storytelling program to explain the breakthrough, including a three-part documentary following 16 innovators on three continents, technical articles with engaging data visualizations, and a wide-ranging social campaign. The docuseries, The Team Behind GT Sophy, was an official selection of the Tribeca X competition at the Tribeca Film Festival. The documentary debuted at the press conference announcing the breakthrough, which drew coverage in more than 400 publications in 30 countries.

The Sony AI team comprises some 75 expert AI researchers and engineers from around the world, led by CEO Dr. Hiroaki Kitano.
